With the script in our
hands, we were able to create a list of all required 3D models and we started looking for
appropriate and freely available models in the Internet. The Star
Wars 3D Modeling Alliance proved to be a great repository of models for the science
fiction scenes. In a prior project of the Institute for
Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (IPF) the whole campus of the university was
modelled as a VRML scene and was also published in the web under the name of CISKA (3D campus information system of
the University of Karlsruhe). Courtesy of the IPF, we could use this data for our own
animation. The new library could be constructed from the material we got directly from the
architect (Heinz Mohl). To model all the human figures, we used a program called Poser
which was designed for doing exactly these kind of things. All the trees were generated in
Xfrog and are courtesy of Bernd Lintermann from Greenworks.
He delivered us manually optimized versions where the polygon count was reduced
considerably without sacrificing much of the visual quality. After all, there were enough
objects left which we had to model ourselves (for example, the office of the architect, a
more detailed version of the already existing library and its nearby environment, the
construction robots, the building site, the inside of the spaceship...). |
